In 1999, after a ten year hiatus from the music scene and new to the blues,
Kate Engler was drawn to the energy of it's soulful sound. She began listening
and playing blues to the likes of Debbie Davies, Susan Tedeschi, and Etta
James, in her basement music room. Eventually, at Merlin's late one Saturday
night, Kate stepped up with the Buddy Hinds Band, to do a few songs. Soon
after, she was sharing the stage with him each night. They released a CD,
which included a couple of her originals, and continued playing throughout
the area as the Buddy Hinds Band & Kate. The band received local recognition
by finishing second in the Blues Society "Memphis Bound" band competition
in 2001. In 2002, Kate branched out to form her own band: KATE ENGLER BAND.
She recordered a second CD "Breakin' All The Rules" featuring several of
Kate's originals, which enjoyed some local radio play. The band received
five nominations in 2002 in the Buffalo Music Awards, for "Top Blues Female",
as well as nominations for band members, Bob Price, Frank Reino, and Dave
Schmeidler, in their respective categories.
In 2003 came the pay back for Kate's hard work. She won the Buffalo Music
Award for "Top Blues Female Vocalist", WNY People's Choice "Top Blues Female",
and WNY Listener's Award "Top Blues Female Vocalist".
2004 has brought yet another metamorphous and more accolades: People's
Choice Award "Blues Female Vocalist" and Buffalo Music Award for "Top Blues
Female", each for the second time in as many years, The 2005 "Muddy" Award
sponsored by the Blues Beat Magazine "Most Promising Local New Talent"
is Kate's most recent honor. Furthermore, Kate is surrounding herself with
the most respected blues players in the area; John Brady, JJ Moscato, Jim
Morabito, and Paul Siwula are among the players on her roster, each bringing
with them a seasoned blues sound.
Kate is a hard working blues women who commands attention whether behind
the guitar or using her wireless to involve the crowd. Her years of hard
work and natural stage ability make her a captivating and thoroughly entertaining
performer, one that shouldn't be missed. |
